1. Assess Your Available Shelf Space, First
At this point, you already have bathroom shelves installed, depending on how much space you need in your bathroom. Plus, you may already be using your shelves, just not that well, hence, your interest in styling them better.
You could either have floating shelves, built-in shelves, ladder shelves, a wall ledge, shower shelves, or even shelves in your bar cart or vanity. You have a ton of options!

Even before we start decorating your shelves, you want to first consider your existing shelves and how they complement your bathroom’s overall style and functionality.
- Considering the size and layout of your bathroom, do you have enough shelves that supplement existing storage?
- Looking at the location of your plumbing fixtures, such as the sink, toilet, and shower, are your shelves positioned in convenient locations making them so functional?
- Are your shelves obstructing these fixtures or making your bathroom feel cramped?
- How much space do I have available for shelves? Is it enough?
- Do my shelves that match my existing bathroom decor style?
By asking these questions, you can make informed decisions about the type of shelves you have and whether they are both functional and aesthetically pleasing in your bathroom space.
Sometimes, you may need to move them around, reduce their number or add more, whether through a professional or as a DIY weekend project.
2. Declutter Your Shelves

Decluttering your bathroom shelves can be a daunting task, but it’s important to tackle it before you start styling your shelves. To make it easier for you, here is my quick decluttering guide:
- Take everything off your shelves and group similar items together, such as skincare products, hair care items, and towels.
- Throw away anything that is expired, broken, or no longer serves a purpose.
- Donate or give away items that are still in good condition but that you no longer use or need.
- Use organizers, such as canisters, jars, and decorative trays, to keep like items together and prevent clutter.
- Consider implementing a “one in, one out” rule, where you get rid of one item before bringing a new one in to prevent the accumulation of unnecessary items.
After organizing the remaining items, you are good to go! Let’s continue styling those shelves.
3. Group Your Items In Odds When Styling Shelves

According to interior designers, grouping items using the rule of threes is an incredibly simple yet powerful way to create impressive groupings of items on your bathroom shelves.
The “rule of the three” is simple: an odd number of things are perceived by our brain as more interesting, attractive, and natural. An even number, on the other hand, looks like something staged, and lacking in mental stimulation.
This means that for all your shelves, 3 objects must be present on them: something vertical, something horizontal, and something that connects the vertical and horizontal items.

For example, on one shelf you could place a tall, slender vase (vertical), a stack of towels or a tray (horizontal), and a decorative item, such as a seashell or plant, that visually connects the two (connecting piece).
On another shelf, you could place a tall, narrow bottle (vertical), a soap dish or small dish (horizontal), and a candle or other decorative item that complements the other two objects (connecting piece).
You can always group items together by:
- Categories such as skincare products, hair care items, or towels.
- Size, with larger items on the bottom and smaller items on top, to create balance and visual interest.
- A color scheme, such as white towels and accessories with pops of greenery or colorful bottles.

Plus, you want to use decorative trays or baskets to group items together and prevent clutter. Now, add decorative items, such as candles or artwork, to add visual interest and tie the overall look together.
4. Mix and Match

When styling your shelves, don’t be afraid to experiment by mixing sizes, colors, and textures also. That actually brings out an artistic kind of look to your shelves.
In odd numbers, for example, mix accessories that complement each other in color, or mix up both large and small items.
Mixing and matching different containers and textures can add visual interest to your bathroom shelves. You can use baskets, glass jars, and ceramic vases together to create a unique and eclectic look.
5. Keep Things Simple, Though

Remember, less is more when it comes to styling any surface, including the bathroom shelf.
You don’t want to overcrowd your shelves with too many items. First, make your shelves functional then choose a few key pieces that you love and that add style and interest to that surface.
To do this, think about what should be most accessible. These should be the items that you use most frequently and make them the most accessible. Think towels, skincare products, soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

Now, subtly elevate what you’re working with and add what you love. Greenery and flowers are great options. Antiques, artwork, or scented candles are other great add-ons.
